style monday | a summer outfit formula

wearing: top (Forever21), skirt (80s vintage), shoes (Anne Taylor), bracelets (thrifted), earrings (MET Museum).

I pretty much live in skirts like this during the warmer spring and summer months. Washable and breathable cotton, pairs equally well with a modern knit top or lightweight cardigan. They add a little glamor into what would otherwise be a basic outfit. Plus who can resist twirling in a circle skirt (especially aided with a bit of pouf from a lightweight vintage petticoat)? I know I can't!

Is it just me, or does it feel weird referring to the 80s and 90s as vintage? I know the 80s has been termed as such for a while, but even that feels odd since I was born in the 80s and remember people wearing things like this skirt. Let's not even get me started on 90s clothing as "vintage"--especially since I wore a lot of what is now being rediscovered by younger sets the first time around! (Which makes me feel incredibly old just typing that... haha!)

My apologies for radio silence last week. I've been struggling with some health issues, and they just all compounded to the point where I decided to largely step away from the internet for a week. Starting to feel back to my old self, and have lots of things planned--including a sewing tutorial that I polled on Facebook about, and some vintage furnishings that I'm revamping. My to-do list for the summer is a mile long--better get started on it!

  2. Really cute! And I absolutely agree with you on calling the 80s and 90s "vintage". It is, since it just has to be 20 years old to be so, but it's hard realizing that I'm now technically "vintage" too (especially realizing how many of my toys have been retired, banned or just aren't made anymore).

  3. Wonderfully lovely outfit - I adore the subtle gypsy-boho vibe at work here, especially in the jewelry.

I've slowly come to make peace with 80s items being termed vintage, but the nineties are still far too modern for that moniker to apply to them in my books, too. (IMO, vintage items should have to be a minimum of 50 years old - but I know that's a personal definition and little more, unlike "antique", which has an industry standard of applying to items that are at least 100 years old).

    1. I agree with you wholeheartedly that vintage should have a bit more of a history to it than 20 years. It's weird to think that by the time my daughter is in her mid teens, the 1940s fashions I love and consider "vintage" will be antiques! :p Plus fashion is so cyclical, is 20 years really fair enough to see if something is worthy of being termed vintage (or just bad fashion!)?

  4. This is a fantastic summer outfit. It's got a really wonderful vintage modern vibe to it. I have a difficult time referring to the 90s as vintage too, for the same reason. However, I actually dressed more like Blossom than Alicia Silverstone a la Aerosmith videos during the 90's so I'm thirlled to revisit these styles now that I have an adult body to put in them.

    1. Yeah... I've been loving the resurgence of crop tops the past couple seasons! So 90s (my favorite one I own definitely screams mid 90s to me... Just needs some wide leg jeans and skater shoes! haha!), but fun to mix with some of my older vintage pieces as well.

  5. The pockets on that skirt look amazing! Not to mention the whole outfit looks super cute, and I love the cut out detail in the back of your top. But I gotta say, I'm so with you on the 80's-90's-can it really be called vintage thing? Because seriously... Really??? I'm sooo old.... ♡

    1. The pockets are what sold me on this skirt! Well, that and it's red (which I can't resist)!
