style monday | gunne sax takes a trip to the 50's

cardigan: vintage, thrifted, skirt: vintage, thrifted, shoes: Forever 21
coat: vintage, thrifted, purse: Kate Spade
As I've been going through my boxes of vintage goodies, weeding out what I'm going to move, put in storage and (hopefully) pass on to new homes, I keep rediscovering finds that I tucked away and forgot about. I try to make myself feel better that this is pretty typical for a semi-serious collector of vintage. I'm afraid though the sad truth may be that I just tend to collect/attract far too many "old clothes"; whether by sheer luck (thrift and estate sale finds) or because people kindly gift them to me. Somebody has to give them a loving home!

This skirt is one of those pieces I had acquired years ago and kept tucked away. For awhile, it was in a box marked "sell", but I'm kind of glad I didn't. It's part of a late 70s/early 80s Gunne Sax jacket, blouse and skirt ensemble. I don't think I'll ever wear the entire ensemble together, but I like the skirt very much on it's own. Of course, despite it's 1980s romantic-prairie origins, I had to style it with a little 1950s flair! It's heavy, warm, and has pockets (why this still gets me excited, I don't know. Perhaps now pockets are even more important for stashing whatever treasure Miss A. has brought or the all important crackers.).

I've been trawling through the holiday floral picks at the craft stores, as I often do this time of year. I found this bunch of plastic holly in a few different styles (of course, this "snow" and glitter version came home for me) and for a cool 50¢ it can add a little bit of holiday flair over the next couple weeks. The tackier, the better this time of year, imho!

I can't  believe Christmas is in 10 days! Miss A. is getting excited and seems to have an inkling of Christmas this year. The Christmas tree has been a source of lots of toddler fixation; she goes up to it multiple times a day and shouts "tree!" until I acknowledge that yes, there is a tree in our dining room! haha. Christmas morning is bound to be very, very exciting this year...

Have a lovely Monday!

  1. You styled that Gunne Sax skirt so perfectly! It almost reminds me of some of the more dirndl-style 1940s garb. And that brooch you whipped up from the floral decorations is perfection! Such a clever idea too :)

  2. I'm so glad to see you back here, Casey. You have such a beautiful style; vintage class without a whiff of costume. I love it!

  3. That Gunne Sax skirt is gorgeous! I have been wanting a set like that for my wardrobe, too. It's much more versatile as separates, I think, rather than a whole outfit. I love your style, Casey!

  4. Ahh Gunne Sax. I'm always stalking thrift stores for Gunne Sax dresses but never with much success. My Aunt wore a gorgeous little 1970s Gunne Sax dress for her high school graduation, and my sisters and cousins and I used to dress up in it. Sadly it is pretty worn out from all those years of play.
It's so very nice to see you blogging again, and I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!

  5. Love the outfit! I'm really digging the look of separates these days, but don't seem to have enough{!} in my wardrobe to really get the look I'm after ~ which is like this one! Great style Casey. :D
And isn't so exciting when the little ones start to get into Christmas? My 3 and a half year old is really into it this year ~ pointing out all the decorations and getting all excited whenever he sees a Christmas tree. It makes it so much fun for Mama too! :) ❤

  6. That skirt is fantastic! I'm also glad it didn't wind up being sold. You styled it so well.
And oh toddlers and tree lights. I remember when my little sister could say tree. She'd point and flail, then go and hug it for some reason. Really kept my my family on our toes.

  7. Fabulous outfit!!! I'm a huge fan of looking a garment's shape, equal to or more (in some cases) to its age, and finding ways to make it work for the decade I'm aiming to have my whole ensemble emulate, just as you've done here (one gets soooo much more mileage from their wardrobe when they approach things this way).

  9. That is a really cute way to style something that could otherwise scream prairie (not that there's anything wrong with that, just not when you don't want it to, lol). I adore the bit of Euro vibe it has too, reminiscent of classic dirndl style with that tie front. Love it. Merry Christmas to you!

  10. 1) Anything with pockets is automatically awesome. Just a fact. So many items of women's clothing just don't have them, so it's always kind of a nice surprise when they do.
    2) I really love this skirt. The last Chanel show, pre-fall or whatever, was inspired by the Austrian alps and traditional clothing there, and the lacing and the ribbon panel remind me a bit of that. I'll have to keep an eye out for Gunne Sax pieces, I've heard good things about the brand.
